Long live healthy cats!

4 simple tips for cat health

1. Schedule annual vet visits

Annual trips to the vet are critical to maintaining your cat’s health—and cats over 7 years old should see the veterinarian twice a year. But regardless of age, see your vet immediately for any of these symptoms: changes in eating habits, weight loss or gain, foul breath, excessive thirst, lethargy, vomiting, coughing, frequent urination, straining in the litter box or blood in stool or urine.

2. Consider an indoor retirement

Statistically, indoor cats live longer than outdoor cats. They’re free from the risks of outdoor life, like predators, traffic, fights and infectious disease. If you want to provide your cat an outdoor option, consider using a harness or leash to walk them. Or create a catio—an area that mimics the outdoors but gives them a view of the world from a safe perch.

3. Keep your cat fit

Encouraging your cat to exercise through play can help prevent feline obesity. Try offering toys, creating areas for climbing or placing food in elevated areas. Or consider adding another cat to your household—a new playmate can promote activity in a sedentary cat.

4. Provide good nutrition

High-quality canned and dry cat foods can offer complete nutrition. And special formulas can help prevent health concerns such as diabetes, kidney issues or dental problems. Hydration is important, too, so be sure to provide ample, fresh water for your cat. Follow the feeding instructions included with the cat food you purchase and consult your vet with any questions.
