They're all grown up—it's time to start treating, and feeding, them that way. Just because they're older, however, doesn't mean they're completely self-sufficient. Adult cats have nutritional needs particular to their life stage just as kittens and senior cats do, and they need your help to meet them. The CatChow.com Adult Care Center will clue you in on what you need to know.

Are most all cat foods these days equally effective in creating an acidic urine pH so as to prevent the formation of crystals?
Does Purina Cat Chow have omega-6 fatty acids in the ingredients?
I own the book 52 Ways To Pamper Your Pet And Other Animals by Lynn Gordon and Jessica Hurley. There is a recipe for “Kitty Cakes” in it and I am curious about a few of the ingredients. Are brewers yeast, flour and eggs ok for cats to eat?

Which kitten foods have ash in them? I was told that some kitten foods advertised on TV have ash in them, which causes bladder problems and makes surgery necessary.
Many pet foods mention poultry/beef by-product meal. What is by-product meal? I have heard somewhere that beef by-products are not good for cats. Is there any truth to this? Should I be looking for products without beef by-products?
My cat is allergic to fish. Why do all of your cat foods contain fish?
How much magnesium in Purina Kitten Chow? Does excessive magnesium in cat food cause urinary tract problems in cats?

Is there a difference between Purina CNM UR-Formula purchased at the vet’s and Purina Special Care Urinary Tract Health Food?
I feed my cat a "premium" cat food. I was just wondering if the higher price means better nutrition? Does Purina have a less active formula?
I don’t understand how some canned cat foods that have preservatives have a shelf life of two years and some “natural” cat foods that use vitamin E as a preservative have the same two year shelf life. How is that possible?
My cat likes to eat Heart Guard (Merial); it contains a lot of fibers like cooked, dried meat. What are these fibers? Is there any cat food made of similar material?
What are the most common ingredients that cause food allergies? Does fish oil help allergies?

Basically, are all cat foods the same?
I feed my two adult cats Cat Chow for urinary tract. Can they have the Cat Chow that prevents hairballs instead or mix them together?
Why don't you have different colors of Cat and Kitten Chow?
Is it true that dry food is bad for male cats?

What is the safest or highest content of ash to be present in food especially for a male cat?
What ingredients in wet or canned food are good for my cat, and what ingredients are bad for my cat?
My cat has been diagnosed has having a kidney disorder. We have been advised to feed a low protein content food and biscuits. The vet has supplied us with KD (dry) formula, however the cat has not taken to this and refuses to eat it. My question is in two parts: what is considered to be low protein content in terms of percentage and is there any moist food products that will serve the same need as KD.
What would be fatty acids to add to my cat's diet -- to get rid of dandruff? He does not have "walking dandruff."
My 14-year-old cat has lost most of her back teeth and is unable to chew. She won't eat dry cat food and is having trouble eating canned cat food. Are there liquid diets out on the market with the same nutrition as dry? Should I make her food myself?
My vet has recommended increasing the protein in my 11-1/2 year old cat's diet by using soft kitten food. Her fasting glucose was 187.6 and she has been consuming more water. She regularly eats Purina One formula for Adult Cats. She weighs over 12 pounds and has not been losing weight. The protein in the Purina One looks high to me, should I switch?
Why is there so much grain in the cat food - I thought cats were carnivores?
 What is poultry by-product meal?
What exactly are chicken by products? I have always been told never to feed by products to my animals, but am finding the natural food brands too rich or too uninteresting for my cats. One of my cats almost died from eating a well-known brand of natural food as he developed a severe urinary tract infection. And quite honestly, their favorite food in the world is Cat Chow.
I gave my kitten (9 months old) some cilantro that I was using in cooking dinner for my family. The cilantro was store-bought but fresh, and she really seemed to enjoy the small amount that I gave her. Is cilantro, or other fresh herbs, toxic for cats?
Of all the Purina Brand Cat Chow dry food products available, which one do you recommend for keeping teeth clean and healthy? Friskies has a dry cat food "Dental Diet". It works beautifully on keeping our cats' teeth clean & healthy.
Why is pork not part of a feline's diet? I see beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, and seafood, offered as a base for a cat's diet; but never do I see pork. Is there a reason? Is pork unhealthy as part of a cat's diet?
 Is your food healthy?
I've been wondering if the cat treats, "Whisker Lickins" are truly all right for my cats. Each one of them is "hooked" and they all are just about constantly wanting me to give them more. Frisbee is the first and he has had two surgeries for urinary tract infection. Do these treats contain what he cannot have?
I would like to know if you use fish by-products in your cat foods? I use Purina Cat Chow, and one of my cats keeps getting bladder infections. The vet said that fish by products are bad and recommended Hill's prescription diet. Is the Purina Urinary Tract Health formula as good? I rescued 20 cats and I want them to be healthy. It saves on veterinarian's bills.
What is the actual nutritional difference between Purina Kitten Chow and Purina O.N.E. kitten food? I want to provide to my kitten, Sam, the healthiest, well balanced diet available. Both are very similar and was wondering what I should be looking for.
I have a dear neighbor who is 89 and has an old cat, Freckles. I have tried for ages to convince her to feed Freckles Purina Senior. She likes to feed Freckles anything she finds: Kitten Chow, off brands, Cat Chow, etc. Please explain why it is important for a 17-year-old cat to be fed Purina Senior cat food and not to jump around with all these other foods. Freckles is a healthy cat for her age and is an indoor cat.
I have a female cat with a history of calcium oxylate urolithiases. She had been eating Purina Pro Plan urinary health formula (ie: acidifying diet) up until the time of diagnosis. I'd like to keep her on a non-prescription Purina diet if at all possible. She is currently eating Cat Chow - is this acidifying (obviously, I'd like to avoid this)?

Why don't they have a 'mouse' flavor cat food?
I have a male/neutered DSH tabby, approx 12 yrs. Other than a few abscesses and a serious injury requiring surgery to repair a tear in his abdominal wall several years back, he has no known health problems. I worked in vet clinics when younger and know male cats can suffer a life-threatening urinary blockage. Therefore I have always fed him HIGH quality canned & dry food with lots of water available. But I cannot find the min/max sodium recommendations for felines. I try to keep it low but can you tell me what the range is? I did not get a very definitive answer from my vet's AHT.
I read the following in one of your answers: In addition, due to this special lower urinary tract health claim, Purina O.N.E. Special Formula should not be fed in conjunction with any other cat foods or treats. My question is may I combine Purina One Special Formula with Purina One Salmon & Tuna, since my cats prefer the fish flavor?
Why don't the cat food products list the calories in the food per serving?
I have a 20 year old cat in excellent health and shape. I have noticed that the dyes in cat food make her throw up - do you have suggestions on what dry cat food would be best?
Does canned cat food have more ash than dry cat food?
Are there bad chemicals for your pet in Purina Cat Chow?
In your opinion - what food offers prime ingredients and nutrition for a healthy, adult long-haired cat? I want to feed my cat the very best!!

My kitten will only eat canned food. I want her to eat dry. I heard it was better for them. If so, how can I do this?
My vet recommends a food with propylene glycol. Is there any way I can see a list of cat food containing this ingredient?
We live in Morocco. Kindly tell me the 'natural' source of TAURINE. Fortunately, I can buy Cat Chow here, but often the price is prohibitive and I must cook millet and fish.
