How to get your cat comfortable with a leash catipedia-icon2.png

Staying indoors helps keep your cat safe from accidents and predators, but you can safely take your indoor cat outdoors! All you need is a harness, a 4- to 6-foot leash and the time and patience for some training.

Begin by allowing your cat to become familiar with these new items. Leave the harness lying out for a few days so your cat can inspect it. Then, attempt to put it on her. Go slowly and don’t force it. If she resists, back away and try again later.

Once your cat is ready and wearing the harness, attach the leash and let your cat drag it, but be sure to watch and follow. Then hold the leash and follow her for short indoor walks.

After the two of you become comfortable with indoor walks, attempt to move outdoors. Again, go slowly and return inside if your cat becomes too afraid. Be sure to praise her, pet her and give her a treat as she makes progress outside. And never pull on the leash—if you need to redirect her, pick her up and carry her instead.

A: Our top priority is the quality of the food that nourishes not only your pets, but the pets we share our lives with, too. So from source to bowl, the quality of our food is assured by taking the following steps:

Ingredient Sourcing

  • Purina ingredient sourcing and processing meet or exceed FDA, USDA or AAFCO standards for pet food. And every supplier of ingredients for Purina products must meet our stringent standards for ingredient specifications, product safety, sanitation and manufacturing practices.
  • Ingredient Testing
  • All of Purina's North American manufacturing facilities have on-site quality assurance laboratories and staff. And we're working to expand the use of technology to further screen ingredients for quality assurance.
  • Ingredient Tracking & Control
  • 99% of all Purina pet food products sold in the U.S. are made in Purina-owned U.S. manufacturing facilities and Purina's sophisticated tracking system ensures important measures of control: All raw ingredients are tracked from time of receipt at our plants, through their inclusion in finished products, and on to retail stores.
